✍🏼 Pre-Match Ramblings
Arsenal visit Paris to attempt to overcome a one goal deficit following a timid performance against PSG at home last week where an early goal from the visitors was the only thing separating the two sides. Arteta said after that game that it’s only half time, and he’s bang on the money. In any other game, a 1-0 deficit at half time would not be insurmountable – this game isn’t any different.
Thomas Partey returns to the midfielder after serving his suspension following a yellow card he picked up in fashion that still annoys me. Our midfield was non existed in the first leg with Rice and Merino being run ragged by the technical and tricky midfield of the Parisians. Hopefully the Ghanaian can calm things down and provide the stability we were missing at the Emirates.
Ousmane Dembele had a hamstring scare following the first leg but it has since been reliably reported that he is fully fit and ready to go for the second leg, so we won’t be getting off easy. Dembele and Kvaratskhelia caused us a lot of problems last week, so Dembele being fit is huge for the home side. The Georgian winger may find himself up against a different fullback in Ben White given that Jurrien Timber’s fitness is doubtful. This could be a positive for Arsenal given the on field chemistry between White, Odegaard, and Saka. Perhaps he is the key to getting Odegaard firing again?
A loss here means our season is as good as over. Nothing left to play for other than clinging on to a Top 5 position in a league table that is tightening up toward the UCL positions. We still have to face Champions Liverpool at Anfield and welcome Newcastle to the Emirates – losing both of those games is very possible, and maybe even likely when you consider our recent league form. If we do lose both of those games then our league position will be looking very dicey.
