✍🏼 Pre-Match Ramblings
Well, here we go again. Premier League football is back, and I, for one, couldn’t be more excited, curious, and nervous to get started.
The big narrative of Arsenal’s season will be if they have solved their attacking issues in the transfer market, and on the training ground. In Gyokeres, Arsenal have an old fashioned target man who loves to run in behind on the end of through balls. What did Arsenal not do last season? Play long balls in behind the defense. Arteta has a tactical puzzle to solve; he certainly has the players to do it in Zubimendi and Odegaard, who can both thrive in a team which wants to progress the ball quickly.
Arsenal became stale and boring to watch last season – does the arrival of Gyokeres up front force Arteta to change the way we play? We have a 27 year old striker who can hit the target with his eyes closed. He is in his prime – we cannot waste him in a system which doesn’t suit him.
Oh yeah, and Manchester United signed Arsenal’s highly reported preferred target, Benjamin Sesko, last week, in a signing which will likely be talked about and compared with Gyokeres all season long (that definitely wont get tiring).
Signings aside, both teams will want to be making a statement in what is the biggest game of the opening weekend. Amorim has trust to repay after holding onto his job and there will be pressure on him to get results straight out of the gate after being backed with a £200m overhaul of his attack.
Similarly, Arsenal fans are getting impatient after coming second in the league for three years running. This Arsenal team features many key players entering their prime. It is time to win the major trophies. First step: beat Manchester United on Sunday.
