✍🏼 Pre-Match Ramblings
After a damp squib goalless draw at home to Liverpool midweek, Arsenal are presented with a chance to recapture some joy by kicking off their FA Cup run against a Portsmouth team that sit one point above the drop zone in the Championship. Since winning the FA Cup in Arteta’s first 6 months in charge of Arsenal, we have failed to progress past the fourth round in each subsequent year. Arsenal and the FA Cup are synonymous with eachother; we have won it a record 14 times, and are overdue a good run in the competition.
Portsmouth find themselves in a position familiar to us with a squad ravaged by injuries. They lost center back Hayden Matthews in the 5-0 thrashing they faced at Bristol City, with their manager speaking publically about their precarious position in defense. Arsenal on the other hand seem to have stabilised on the injury front, apart from the fresh injury picked up by Pieroa Hincapie against Liverpool. Lewis Skelly will be our only option at left back, and his performances have faced criticism this season as they have not lived up to the highs he reached in his breakout season last year.
Gabriel Jesus will likely get a start over the struggling Gyokeres who is without an open play goal since November 1st against Burnley. The Swede is currently on a 6 game goal drought, and it’s getting to a point where people are losing, or have lost patience. If one of the alternatives up front can find form, Gyokeres may struggle to get many more starts in big games this season. With Havertz’s return imminent, the clock may be ticking for our #14 to make a name for himself in his debut season.
